My first, and last, 5K

On April 16th I did something I thought I would never do...I (pseudo) ran a 5K. You see, it's global month of service and we are doing a lot of fun community service events with Starbucks. As a district, all of the store managers had committed to participating in the Joe P Rally Run to benefit childhood cancer research. I intended to walk the 5K because I am terribly out of shape and had not trained to run at all. Plus, it was a very cold day. However, all of my friends were running so I let myself be peer pressured into running. I definitely walked quickly for a good portion of the race, but I still ran a lot. And it was horrible, I might add. I do not understand you people that run for "fun." My final time was 43 minutes, which I decided was decent considering a) I walked part of it, b) zero training, c) out of shape, and d) NOT a runner. Oh, and I was sore and whiney for a good three days afterwards, pathetic. Perhaps I should look into getting in shape and making this a healthy habit of mine. Probably not, though.

Going Back

I am scheduled to go back to work bright and early Monday morning. I cannot believe how quickly the last three months have gone by, to say I am sad is putting it lightly.

I have loved loved loved being a part of every moment of Liam's life so far. I have loved pretending to be a housewife. It's been so nice to cook and bake and get laundry done throughout the day instead of a mad dash in the evenings.

That being said, I am blessed to go back to a job that I love, a job that I am (hopefully still) good at. I am anxious about transitioning back into a forty hour work week, especially one that starts with my alarm going off at 4am most days. I know I will have to give myself some grace and pray for it from my peers and employees as my company has changed several things in the three months I have been on leave. My store itself has at least two new team members that I have yet to work with! I have a lot of adapting to do and a lot of remembering as well. I currently can't remember any of my sixteen different passwords or codes to safes and alarms. I am also nervous about trying to arrange my work day around my pumping needs as it is in Liam's best interest to remain on a breast milk diet. I am hopeful that I will be able to find a balance quickly and that my team won't resent the time I will have to spend off the floor to pump. I am grateful that my boss in on my side and has given me several resources to make this easier on myself.

I am so thankful that Ryan will be staying home with Liam. It would break my heart even more to have to drop him off in the arms of a stranger at day care. He will be in good hands. I know that they will have a lot of fun and hopefully Ryan will be able to get some studying done during nap times.

Thankfully, my schedule grants me the opportunity to be home by 2 pm most days. That gives me a lot of time to still love on my little man. Hopefully, I can dwell on that and not on the fact that in twelve months time I will have spent 84 days at work and away from Liam. Can you tell I'm trying to psych myself up for this? :)

Please pray for me and our little family as we make this huge transition. Pray that I will have grace to do my job without crying all day. Pray that Liam bird will be good for his daddy and take his bottles. Pray that Ryan will have patience and will use his time wisely to study when he can. And, if you are one of my customers, or one of my employees, please be patient and kind as I make my way back to the land of the working woman. I promise I will try my best!

i think i can, i think i can...

I am psyching myself up for a very very busy week.  Isn't the week before vacation always the worst?  I mean, I am usually pretty busy so I don't think I actually have more to do this week.  I am just so ready for a break that it seems like far more than it usually does.  The good news is; my Monday is over!  All I have to do today is empty and load the dishwasher and make supper.  Wonderful!
Then I get to open three days in a row, have my monthly meeting with my district manager, go to one super fun birthday dinner, go to my amazing home group, do a lot of laundry, pack for myself, pack for Gus, find out what we are doing with Gus, eat all of the leftovers...and we're off!
Like a herd of turtles.
I am so looking forward to relaxing and doing nothing for a few days.  Ahh...

house of pain...

the title of this post may be a bit dramatic i realize...but last week was an interesting one for the hawk house.

ryan has taken up rugby again in the form of the nashville rugby club (go outlaws!), and he has practice on tuesday evenings. last tuesday while he was a practice i was hanging out with our friend kirsten waiting for him to be finished. i received a phone call from a number i did not recognize and it was ryan. he said, "hey can you guys come get me? i passed out and they won't let me drive." what an interesting call to get, i sort of felt like a mom being called to come get a sick child. we went to get him and got the whole story as well. while practicing, he took a finger to the eye and lost a contact lens. then proceeded to practice and run laps--with eyesight in only one eye (he is blind). he got dizzy, passed out, and was apparently out long enough that they felt the need to call the paramedics. the paramedics checked him over and deemed him okay and he was fine. just a funny little story.

fast forward to thursday. i was at work organizing and decided to cut the flaps off of a box (something i do frequently) with my handy dandy box cutter. i was also talking while partaking of this favorite pastime of mine and slipped and cut a nice gash in my arm. right below my wrist. i quickly moved to the sink because i was sure it would spew blood. it really didn't bleed much, but was quite ripped apart. i retreated to the back room and with the assistance of two of my shift supervisors, bandaged my wound and called the doctor. then ryan received the phone call of, "hey, can you come get me? i need you to take me to get some stitches." yup, that's right...three stitches. i felt like a moron. not only for slicing myself up at work, but if i had been an inch or so higher i could have cut some important veins and been in a rescue-911 situation. yikes!

all's well that ends well. we are healing and enjoying the humor in the situations for now...

in a flash...

this is going to be quick, because i'm at the library. sorry it's been a month since a post, but life has been crazy! crazy good though. soon i will no longer have to untilize the internet at the library because we will be able to afford our own internet connection... i got my assistant manager promotion and will be started at a different store september 11th. i'm really excited! we took a most wonderful vacation to colorado for summer and toby's wedding, and to visit the amazing fam. and next week we will be traveling to the great states of arkansas and oklahoma for brian and lindsey's wedding. so like i said, busy. hopefully things will slow down and we can actually get back to regularly posting. and i will eventually get around to putting up pictures of the house. i promise.
